United: adj. characterized by unity; being or joined into a single entity) "presented a united front"
In the wake of all this talk about Rooney going, I know this will be a drop of hope in an ocean of misery (and/or idiocy) but I wanted to make some feelings clear. First off, before I begin, while I'm devastated by the news, I'm not going to lose sleep over Wayne leaving. Don't get me wrong, as a player nobody embodies the desire and passion that screams Manchester United like he does. However whether it be about money or about ambition, any player who would turn his back on Ferguson after everything Fergie has done for him, and for the club, can't truly be said to love United (I'd make the same point about the "sack Fergie save Rooney" brigade, but I digress). I mean, can you see there being ANY issue that Ryan Giggs as an example couldn't resolve with Fergie out of love for our club?
Now, the main point of what I wanted to say is this. Our club, our great club, might not have always been United (I'm guessing the aforementioned "fans" won't have heard of Newton Heath), but god damn we have ALWAYS been united. We have people screaming from the rafters about how with the great Giggsy, Scholesy and Neville, as well as VDS retiring, Rooney wanting out, and the debt, that Manchester United are dying. Well, I have a few choice words for those people, but to sum in up in a few words it would be this: we always persevere.
For those of you with short memories, allow me to make a few points:
-United went through a transitional phase a few years ago in which we stopped winning trophies. What happened? WE PERSEVERED.
-United sold Ronaldo, the best player in the world at the time, and in the past have done likewise with huge players such as Keane, Beckham, RVN and Stam. What happened? WE PERSEVERED.
-United went to within a couple of games of sacking Fergie in the early 90s. What happened? WE PERSEVERED.
-United were in no mans land until the mid 80s when Fergie took us over. What happened? WE PERSEVERED.
-United were relegated to the second tier of English football in 1974, with a goal from an ex-Red in blue colours doing the damage. What happened? WE PERSEVERED.
-United went from being a team who had won the European cup to one that had to adjust to life without Law, Charlton and Best. What happened? WE PERSEVERED.
And, perhaps most poignantly of all:
-United lost 8 of what could have been the greatest United team of all time on a cold runway in Munich. What happened? IN THEIR MEMORY WE PERSEVERED.
My point is, in spite of all the drama, all the setbacks, all the players coming and going, this club is built on a never-say-die attitude. It doesn't matter if we lost all our money, our players, Fergie, and did a Leeds by taking a trip to League One. I, and all true fans, would scream and shout for our team. Why? Well, with the memories of glory in our minds, and the spirits of the lost in Munich burning in our hearts, we know that WE WILL PERSEVERE!
And that my fellow fans, is why there is only ONE United.Is it getting better
